Tourism and Creative Industries
Lesotho offers a vibrant business environment, temperate climate, pleasant living conditions and excellent recreational opportunities
One of the major unique features of the country is altitude. Lesotho is the only country in the world which lies entirely 1000m above sea level. In fact, the lowest point in Lesotho is 1400m above sea level. There are immense opportunities to explore because of Lesotho’s unique features including:
- Attractive and unique tourism destination mountain and highland settings, a pristine environment
- Short stays for African and international visitors travelling on the continent for leisure and business.
- Immersion in Lesotho’s unique African culture and heritage
- Visa free access to Lesotho by nationals over 70 countries
- Lesotho is attractive to visitors from the Northern Hemisphere during winter due to its snow
High Altitude Training Facilities
Lesotho is an ideal location for high altitude sports training facilities. A high class, integrated facility is envisaged that would feature among other things:
- Outdoor and indoor sports arenas
- Accommodation
- Wellness spa(s)
- Sports treatment / Medi-centre

Water Sports and Recreation
Existing and prospective Lesotho Highlands Water Project dams pose a notable opportunity for initiating water-based sporting and recreational activities. In particular the dams are suited to leisure cruise boats and extreme sporting events. Already the Corporation (LTDC) is operating a small cruise on Mohale dam. This operation will be transferred to a private operator for more efficient operation and further development.
These types of activities are suitable for both the Katse and Mohale dams. In addition to these two dams, there are further developments in the pipeline; namely, Phase 2 of the Highlands Water Project, and the Metolong lowlands water supply reservoir which will spawn more
Health and Wellness Resorts
Lesotho has a number of attributes that can be leveraged to position the country as a health and wellness destination.
These include:
- High altitude
- Clean mountain air
- Abundance of naturally clean water
- Distinct seasons of the year
- Endemic medicinal plants
- Hot springs
- Reclusiveness
These contribute a great potential to Health spas and wellness resorts.
Accommodation Facilities
The country is under-supplied with accommodation facilities of appropriate standards particularly along key and strategic tourism nodes.
Lack of accommodation is the major source of revenue leakage from tourism in Lesotho. Droves of tourists from South Africa cross into Lesotho for the day, only to go back and sleepover in South Africa.
